Right Questions = Right Answers = Right Actions

"Mastery is choosing to use the situations we find ourselves in rather than letting them use us." ~ Debbie Ford

Yesterday, as President of the Nevada Professional Coaches Association, I had the pleasure of interviewing New York Times best-selling author Debbie Ford. Those of us who want to evolve and lead healthier lives, have more loving relationships and find the career of our dreams, often focus our energy on finding the ‘answers.” Debbie, in her new book The Right Questions: Ten Essential Questions to Guide You To An Extraordinary Life (HarperSanFrancisco, April 2003) delivers us the power to create the life we desire, one choice at a time.

The Right Questions offers a clear and concise process to challenge our daily choices, which allows us to see whether our actions are, in fact, aligned with our goals for the future. For most people, they are not. In fact, most of us regularly make choices that are in direct opposition to where we say we want to go. The Right Questions brings us face to face with the reality that we are the ones who create our future.

“The questions we ask have the power to open us up or shut us down. Questions can awaken us to a new perspective or they can reinforce our darkest beliefs about ourselves. The Right Questions are either/or questions that bring to light the positive or negative consequences of all our actions.” explains Ford.

Here are the Right Questions:

Will this choice propel me towards an inspiring future or will it keep me stuck in the past?

Will this choice bring me long-term fulfillment or will it bring me short-term gratification?

Am I standing in my power or am I trying to please another?

In this situation, am I looking for what’s right or am I looking for what’s wrong?

Will this choice add to my life force or will it rob me of my energy?

Will I use this situation as a catalyst to grow and evolve or will I use it to beat myself up?

Will this choice empower or disempower me?

Is this an act of self-love or is it an act of self-sabotage?

Is this an act of faith or is it an act of fear?

Am I choosing from my humanity or from my divinity?

The Right Questions enable us to look at the facts and determine whether or not our choices empower us. Only by exploring the motives behind our actions do we gain the power to exchange them. She talks about the prior commitments we have made that are subconscious and until we become aware of them, they govern us. An example is that if money was tight as a kid, perhaps that child made a commitment to always buy what they wanted when they had the money. The prior commitment could be in direct conflict with the person’s goal today of becoming financially independent.

These ten inquiries support you in bypassing your intellect — your justifications, excuses and rationalizations — and your emotions — your whims, wants and cravings - and provide a true north by which you can navigate your daily behaviors. The questions work for children as well as organizations. Ask yourself this question: “How different would the future of the world be, if we each asked ourselves these questions on a daily basis?”
