"We are what we repeatedly do." ~ Aristotle
It's Time To Decide
Have you ever wondered what your purpose in this life is? What exactly are you supposed to be doing here? That thought never even occurred to me until about 1988 and by that time I had already had two marriages and raised two children. Today I find that totally amazing. But the truth is that I was so busy doing the marriage, the parenting, the career, the community, I never even stopped to think about the bigger picture. When my husband was killed in an automobile accident in 1987 and my grandson was borne the same year, my life seemed to be calling for me to get in touch with the bigger picture. And as you may have noticed when you are open to something, it usually shows up.
In 1988 I took a trip with friends to New Orleans and during a visit to a metaphysical bookstore (the whole idea of metaphysics was new to me at the time), I was persuaded by my friend to book a session with a physic. As I am making the appointment, I said to the proprietor, "I'm not even sure what to talk to this person about." "Well," he replied, "most people begin by asking what their purpose is in this life." Wow, what a novel thought - you mean I'm here for a reason?
Needless to say I was off on a journey. In a nutshell what the psychic said to me was "You have chosen to come back at this time, because never before has there been so much opportunity for change." Doesn't sound like a lot on the surface, does it? Yet, it radically changed my life. First of all, I was a person who didn't relish change and secondly as you can see from what I just shared in the first paragraph, life was changing and changing big time! Thus my personal growth and self-development process, which had actually begun a few years earlier, took a giant leap forward.
The reason I share this with you is not to encourage (or discourage) you to see a physic or get involved with metaphysics but simply to suggest that …'never before has there been so much opportunity for change'. Just by looking at the events of the last few months to us and to this country not only are the changes happening, but also people are beginning to change on the inside. There has never been a better time than now for us to decide if we are ready to make some BIG TIME changes within our lives, our hearts, and our relationships. What changes, if any, would you like to see take place in your life?
Last week I was asked to give a talk on stress and how it pertains to September 11 and to the holidays. I came up with an acronym for stress (Sucking The Remaining Energy is Self Sabotage). Since stress is the leading cause of illness and missed work due to illness and the cause of most failed relationships, it definitely affects all of us. I think it is safe to say that September 11 sucked most of our remaining energy. Why did September 11 push us "over the edge"? One explanation is that we were on the edge already. We live on the edge. Is this the way you want to live your life? Are you anything like I was, so focused on the marriages, the parenting, and the career that you don't have the time or don't take the time to ask the question, "What is my purpose in life, why am I here?"
Most people only make changes when inspired to or are given permission to. Sometimes we need to be inspired in order to give ourselves permission. Sometimes we need tragedy in order to give ourselves permission. What is it for you? If September 11 didn't rock your world - I hope it doesn't take losing your spouse or some similar tragedy. Now is the perfect time for you to reevaluate your world, your work, your schedule, and your habits. Take this time between Thanksgiving and the New Year to make a decision. Is the life you are leading bringing you joy and peace? How do you want the remainder of your life to look? Is the picture you have been holding all these years, what you really want? Is that picture in line with your vision (the bigger picture of why you are here)? Now is the time to decide.
Anne Frank once said, "How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment to improve the world." That improvement begins with you and it begins with me. It begins at home in our own minds with a decision. It's time.
